There are 799 million illiterate people in the world, with over 14 million in Egypt alone. How do they cope in world of words and numbers? What do we need to consider to design applications, services and devices optimised for these users? And are there lessons that can be applied to designing for all users? This presentation will draw on exploratory field research conducted by researchers from Nokia in India, China, Nepal and Uganda and will cover the kinds of qualitative methods that were applied. You'll also learn, fundamentally, why illiterate people are smarter than you.
