Henry Markram obtained his B.Sc. (Hons) from Cape Town University, his Ph.D from the Weizmann Institute of Science, went to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as a Fulbright Scholar, and to the Max Planck Institute as a Minerva Fellow.

He discovered a watershed synaptic learning principle that underpins learning and memory processes. As Assistant Professor at the Weizmann Institute for Science, he started to systematically reverse engineer the mammalian brain. He received early tenure, and in 2002 he moved to the EPFL, in Switzerland where he was appointed Full professor and Founder/Director of the Brain Mind Institute.

Markram continued to unravel the blue prints of the brain and discovered the fundamental that could underlie autism. Markram has received numerous awards and published over 85 papers. In 2005 the EPFL signed a strategic alliance agreement with IBM to launch one of the largest simulation experiments in the world - the Blue Brain Project.
